All-in-one desktop webcam keeps disconnecting?

Find out whether an all-in-one webcam problem comes from the camera, browser, or app, then work through fixes for brief freezes and disconnects.

Your all-in-one desktop camera works for a few minutes, then freezes, disappears, or stops sending video. It can be hard to tell whether the camera itself is failing or one app is losing access to it.

Compare the camera in a browser test and in the app where the problem happens. Test Everything checks the computer step by step, and the Camera Test gives you a live preview with resolution and frame-rate information.

Check when the webcam stops working

  1. Open Test Everything and follow its steps until you reach the camera check. Allow camera access when the browser asks. This gives you a first check alongside the rest of the computer tests.
  2. For a closer look, open the Camera Test and watch the live preview for several minutes. Note whether the picture freezes, turns black, or stops appearing, and whether the reported resolution or frame rate changes.
  3. Close the test page before opening the video app that usually has trouble. Join a preview or test call, and check whether the webcam fails there too. Only one app may be able to use the camera at a time.
  4. Repeat the comparison after restarting the computer. If the camera behaves differently after sleep, a restart, or a long video call, note that trigger as well.

The tests run in your browser on your device. The camera preview is not uploaded or saved as a recording.

What the result means

The browser preview stays steady, but the meeting app loses video

The camera can provide a stable picture, so the app, its camera selection, or its permission is the likelier cause. Check that the app is using the built-in camera, not an unused virtual camera or another input. Then check that the app has permission to use the camera.

The preview freezes in the browser and the app

A problem that appears in more than one place is less likely to be a single app setting. Permissions, the camera driver, an operating-system issue, or the camera hardware may be involved. Work through the fixes below, then repeat the test.

The camera is missing from the browser

The browser may not have permission, or the operating system may not be presenting the camera to it. Check the system camera privacy setting and the browser's permission for this site. If the camera is missing in other apps too, check whether the operating system detects it.

It fails only after sleep or a long call

This points toward a problem that appears during a change of state, such as waking the camera or keeping it active for a while. Restart first, then check for system and camera-driver updates. If the failure continues across apps after updates, the camera or its internal connection may need service.

How to fix it

  1. Check the camera shutter and privacy key. Look for a physical shutter beside the lens, a camera switch, or a keyboard key with a camera symbol. A shutter can be easy to miss on an all-in-one display. Do not press or pry at the camera lens or display panel.
  2. Close other apps that may be using the camera. Quit meeting, streaming, and camera apps, then reopen only the app you want to test. If the browser test is still open, close it before trying the meeting app.
  3. Allow camera access in the operating system. On Windows 11, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera. Turn on Camera access and Let desktop apps access your camera. On macOS, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and allow access for your browser and video app.
  4. Allow the site in your browser. Open the browser's site controls beside the address bar, find the camera permission, set it to allow, and reload the page. If the browser has a camera selector in its site settings, choose the all-in-one's built-in camera.
  5. Select the camera again in the video app. Open the app's video or device settings and select the built-in webcam. If the picture is still frozen, leave the preview, close the app fully, and reopen it.
  6. Restart the computer and check for updates. On Windows 11, check Settings › Windows Update. To see whether Windows detects the camera, right-click Start, open Device Manager, and look under Cameras. On macOS, check System Settings › General › Software Update. Install available updates, restart, and test again.

When it's probably a hardware problem

If the camera repeatedly freezes or disappears in the browser and multiple apps after you have checked permissions, restarted, and installed available updates, the problem may be in the camera module or its internal connection. If the built-in camera is absent from the operating system as well, that is another reason to seek service.

Do not open the all-in-one or remove the display bezel to reach the camera. Contact the manufacturer or a repair shop, especially if the computer is under warranty. A technician can check the internal connection and replace the camera module if needed.

Why comparing apps helps

A webcam is accessed through several layers: the camera hardware, the operating system, the browser or app, and that program's own camera selection. A steady preview in one place but a failure in another narrows the search to the layer that differs. If both fail at the same time, focus first on operating-system access, the driver, or the hardware.

When you contact support, note which tests failed, how long the camera worked before stopping, and whether restarting changed the result.
