    What is bufferbloat?

When the line is full, the router and modem hold the extra data in a queue. If that queue is too long, every new request waits in line, so a game, a call or a web page answers slowly while someone else downloads, uploads or backs up photos.

    How to fix it

    • Turn on SQM, Smart Queue or Adaptive QoS in your router’s settings (the name depends on the maker). It keeps the queue short and usually solves the problem.
    • Set its limits a little below your real speed, about 85 to 90%, so the queue forms in your router and not in the provider’s equipment.
    • If your router has no such setting, a newer router or mesh system that has it often helps more than a faster internet plan.

The test moves up to 200 MB down and 80 MB up. On mobile data this counts toward your plan. Response times are measured to our server; what matters here is how much they rise under load.
